Root canal is a procedure required when the bacteria in a tooth has been neglected and has traveled to the nerve inside of the tooth. At this point, we will have to clean out the infection by drilling a hole in the infected tooth and remove the infected nerve tissue. After we remove the tissue, we mechanically clean the canal spaces inside of the tooth to remove any residual infection.

After we clean the canals, we fill those empty canals with a material called "gutta-percha" to complete the root canal procedure. After the root canal is completed, the tooth usually requires additional restorative procedures.
